The first Silkstone Shuffle of 2015 saw almost 200 runners compete in the Senior and Junior Races. This is the first leg of the series which is now in its eleventh year and the event continues to grow in popularity. The scenic multi-terrain race, promoted by Barnsley Harriers, is a challenging four and a half mile route which features an interesting combination of stony paths, trails, grass paths and road. Each of the four races in the calendar year - spring, summer, autumn and winter - is a race in itself - but there are series awards for runners who take part in all four events. Weather conditions were pretty good and the course was conducive to running, producing respectable times across the board.
First home was David Thompson of Barnsley AC in 26.53 with Penistone Footpath runner Daniel Hague in second and Kevin Doyle of Kimberworth Striders in third place. The other Men's category awards were as follows: Senior man - Brendan Wain, Wakefield Tri Club; Vet 40 - Lee Rawson, Kimberworth Striders; Vet 50 Andrew Thompson, WTC; Vet 60, Alan Knox, PFR; Vet 70 David Trickett, Hallamshire Harriers. David set a new V70 course record of 31.51 knocking almost 4 minutes off the previous mark. In the Ladies race there was a fine win for Zanthe Wray of Dark Peak Fell Runners, striding in almost 2 minutes ahead of the field. Runner up was Julie Wilson of Hallamshire Harriers and third home was Elizabeth Champion of Kingstone. Barnsley Harrier Sarah Gough was first Senior lady in her first ever Shuffle. First Lady V40 was Claire Chapman, KS; LV50 Julia Johnson PFR; LV60 Gail Tombs Ackworth RR; LV70 Pam Rawson, Handsworth Roadhogs. In addition to promoting the Race, Barnsley Harriers members had a Bake Off and provided buns and cakes which raised £161.70 for Comic Relief 2015. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
